FIELD NOTES · ABOUT THE TRAVELER

About Me

The miles came before the map.

Travel was part of my life long before Mike on the Map. I spent more than 26 years in the U.S. Army, where assignments, temporary duty, moves, training and deployments took me across the country and around the world.

Today, I work in government travel administration, helping travelers navigate official travel, transportation, lodging and the rules that come with it.

Mike on the Map is the personal side of travel. I like exploring by plane, Amtrak or road trip—including nearby small towns. A place does not have to be famous, expensive or far away to be worth the trip.

Here, I share places to visit, local history, things to do, how to get there and what a trip actually costs. I am curious about airports and airlines, trains, hotels, road trips, unusual destinations and the logistics that turn an idea into a plan.

Go somewhere. Learn something. See what it costs. Put another pin on the map.
